Other Things Being Equal

$25.00
sold out

“HOWEVER, THE NOTE WAS NOT THROWN AWAY. LIKE ALL GIRLS, SINCE SHE COULD NOT HAVE THE HANDSHAKE, SHE HAD TO CONTENT HERSELF WITH A SIGHT OF THE GLOVE.”

Mabel: My first Mandylion book is Other Things Being Equal by Emma Wolf (1865-1932). First published in 1892 by A.C. McClurg, Other Things Being Equal is the story of Ruth Levice, a beautiful young Jewish woman growing up in San Francisco in the second half of the nineteenth century. She is the pride and joy of her doting parents: Jules, her scholarly father, and Esther, her socialite mother. When Esther is bedridden by a bad case of hysteria (what dignified woman in the nineteenth century didn’t get a little hysteric sometimes?), Ruth’s cloistered world bursts open. She’s suddenly responsible for running the household and overseeing her mother’s recovery. In the latter, she’s advised by the handsome Dr. Herbert Kemp….Sparks fly. A romance emerges. But wait! It’s complicated! Because Ruth is Jewish. And Kemp is Unitarian. Their match is forbidden! What will Ruth choose? The only world she’s ever known, her faith and family? Or a lover who understands her and helps her to express herself? You’ll just have to buy the book to find out!!!!

This is the book for you if:

  • You’re a romantic.

  • You’re a daddy’s girl.

  • You’re from California.

  • Your heart is as gentle and sweet as the first rosebud of spring.

Other Things Being Equal features a new introduction by Mabel Capability Taylor. Printed in limited quantities, sold as a numbered edition of 250.

ISBN: 979-8-9886061-0-9.
